Focus on Global Education -

Students enrolled in LI755A KE (Summer 2008), The School Library:  The Center of the School Universe constructed units of study (Lesson Plans).  Using Buzzeo and Kurtz (2002) 35 Best Books for Teaching U.S. Regions, these unites of study take students, as these authors say, "on a learning-packed trip" to a country or region of the world.  These units challenge students to read deeply and learn about people, culture, language, education, leisure activities, disease, health care, religion, work, natural resources, economics, politics, and other topics of interest and relevant to some aspect of their school's curriculum or other local priority for teaching about global perspectives.

Units of study posted here reflect the American Association for School Librarians (2007) Standards for 21st Century Learners.  The 21st centuryt learner is able to inquire, think critically and gain knowledge; draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge; share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as memebers of our democratic society; pursue personal and aesthetic growth.

Units of study posted here will be organized to form a collection titled "Focus on Global Education."  This collection will be analyzed to answer these critical questions:

1.  How can we ensure that global perspectives become an integral part of learning and literacy?

2.  What role does the school librarian have in meaningful, educational partnerships?

3.  What is the importance of learning languages (other than English)?

4.  How can the teacher-librarian and content teachers make students' school experiences authentic?

Stacy again. Ashley for your problem, I think if you go to the bottom of what you type in or copy in, there will be a place that says attachments on the right hand side. Click on that and a box comes up for you to browse and select files there. Then save it all and you should be done. Hope this helps. Of course if you read my above comment, I'm not the best person for advice.

Mirah - I just want you all to know that I'm reading your units. I'm so pleased with what I see here! I do hope you will make time to read and take advantage of these wonderful ideas and resources. I can see from this that through these units you will be involved in the kind of instruction and assessment of student learning that will lead to your being able to make statements about the impact you are having on student learning. I will write more about this idea in my response document.

I'm so pleased to see you using nthis "add comment" section of the wikie commenting on how things are going for you and asking for assistance and assisting each other. Thanks, Stacy, for giving Ashley good guidance here. I hope students will keep this proactive communication going.
Great.

I am today sending out the first rubrics to individual student's email address.

I want you to know that as I am reading the units, I am also compiling details that will be organized into my responses to the 4 research questions above. My plan is to have read everything and completed my document by August 15. I will keep you informed here about how it is going. This is a very exciting challenge for me. I hope I can do it as well as it deserves to be done. Throughout the years, I have always wanted to give this kind of feedback to the Summer Institue students. Thanks for your willingness to allow me to do it this year. Thanks to everyone for your thorough and hard work to construct great units that are both authentic and global.

Ashley in Gridley--I attached my file under the File section of the LI755 Wiki page, right above this Comments section. For some reason, this was the only way I could attach my file. Anytime I clicked to add a New Page, the attachment option wouldn't work. So, my file name doesn't appear in the left-hand column like everyone else's. My unit is called "Simply Savanna" and is geared for 2nd grade students. It uses Jane Kurtz's book "Water Hole Waiting" as a starting point for the unit. I hope all of you can access my file from its current location. Feel free to use what you can from it in your libraries/classrooms.

Dianne in Bartlesville Ok I attached my file under the LI755. My unit is called Sky Legends in the Backyard above. Its 5-6 rather long as I wanted to make it complete think i will use it as springboard for science wiki. I have two others, Library ProfTech and Green Country Storytellers (under construction)

Ellie in Shawnee Mission--My unit is the Peace Corps Library Project. I tried to figure out how to put it with the other units under Global Lesson Plans but could not find any way to copy or attach it successfully. So I went to My Page and attached it as a file there. It is oddly spaced and fuzzy when you bring it up there. If I knew how to improve the posting I would do it.

**Yes, Gaila it opens, looks great! See you, Sue Pray
Hi, guys! This is Gaila from Bolivia. I just posted my Bolivia unit somewhere. Can somebody check to see if it can be opened. If not, take me thru the paces of how to attach it! It could be in several places. Have a great school year! edited 05:43, 30 Jul 2008

Good afternoon! Judy in Topeka - This is my second attempt to try loading my unit, and I have no idea where the first attempt landed. I am actually a gifted facilitator and not a librarian, but I attended the summer institute and really enjoyed it! I've tried to plan for mythology around the world, and my unit is called Mythology and the Modern World - should be under LI755 (I think!).

Our unit plan, like so many others, was added to multiple locations (thanks to trial-and-error). It is found on this home page as an attached file and it is also under "Global Lessons." It was also placed as a new page under the Sierra Leone unit--by accident. We tried to erase just that portion so that the Sierra Leone unit would stand alone, however it still shows up as a blank page under Sierra Leone. Please disregard that one and instead direct your attention to either of the other two locations.

Thanks,
Gabrianna Hall and Kathi Knop

Hello everyone, I believe my file is in one other place on this site, sorry about that. Seems that I have it in the right place now. I am Sandra Kirk from Topeka and my unit is River Rafting which is a unit on the study of the rivers of the world. Have a great school year!

I've added my unit entitled Children and Survivors of the Holocaust. It is written for a 9th grade English class, but it could be adapted to any high school level or integrated into an American or World History course, as well. - Brittany Birch

I attached two things.
one is the global project program
and the second is
konnection kapricorn.
konnection kapricorn is a brief write up
of a global exchange program I am doing
this fall with a teacher in london.
it's a creative exchange and I would hope
that if any of you know creative writers or
artists you would take a peek and the brief
description of the program and forward
them to me at
dewa@jocolibrary.org
or look to my blogger profile
I will add a new blog for this program
in the next couple weeks.

cheers.

From Mirah - Hello all - As you can see, it is now Tuesday, Aug 11 evening and I have now finished grading all the 755 units. As I promised, I emailed each student her/ his rubric. Offical grades were entered into ESU BuzIn on time (grades due tomorrow August 12). To update you on my promised portion of the learning activity, as I read each unit, I analyzed it and recorded details in a data chart. I also made notes and comments that I am using to answer the questions that I posed in the syllabus. I intend to post my analysis by Aug 15 here on the wiki. Please do watch for it. Please do let me hear from you if you have further questions or comments. I hope you all see my email response to you (along with your rubric) - I wrote comments to each student in the individual email messages. If you do not see yours, please do let me know. I emailed to the address on your paper and if I had an additional email address, I included it, too. I hope that helped to get things to you where you will be reading. Thanks to everyone for your hard work on this assignment. Together we constructed an excellent publication, I think. In the weeks to come, I'm going what I can do to put some "organization" into it. If you have suggestions for doing so, please do let me know. Mirah

Mirah - I now have my research report, draft 1, ready to share with you. The file that I added above is titled "Document Analaysis of Focus on Global Perspectives Units." I hope you will read this and give me your feedback. Please do tell me when you have read it. Send me your comments about what does or does not surprise you, what you question, and/or what you feel can be further clarified. In this way, you will be assisting me in verifying the data and the analysis. Remember that in this study, your units of study have given you "voice" in the conversation about what school librarians do to partner with others to help students learn and achieve. I certainly want to be as clear as I can about these important matters. I hope you will write to me anytime, and hopefully very soon. I want to keep moving forward with making these findings visable and available to the profession. Please let me hear from you within the few days and weeks. Thanks so much for all your work and reading. Mirah
